To deposit a cheque in a bank in India, fill a cheque deposit slip (pay-in slip) with your account number, cheque number, amount and drawee bank, then hand it in at the counter with the cheque or drop it in the cheque box. Under RBI’s continuous clearing, cheques presented between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM usually clear the same working day.
How to Deposit Cheque in Bank: The Quick Answer
Depositing a cheque takes about five minutes at a branch and needs only the cheque and a filled pay-in slip. You do not need ID if the cheque goes into your own account. The bank scans the cheque into the Cheque Truncation System (CTS), and the credit reaches your account once the paying bank confirms it.
| Step | What you do | Time |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check the cheque (name, date, amount, signature) | 1 minute |
| 2 | Fill the pay-in slip | 2 minutes |
| 3 | Submit at counter or drop box, keep the counterfoil | 1 minute |
| 4 | Track the SMS alert and passbook entry | Same day, usually |
If you are new to cheques, our guide on what a cheque is and how it works covers the basics.
What to Check Before You Deposit a Cheque
Most cheque returns happen because of errors that were visible before the cheque reached the bank. A two-minute check at home saves a trip and a return charge.
- Payee name: It must match the name on your bank account. Small spelling differences can cause a return. See drawer, drawee and payee explained if the roles are unclear.
- Date: The cheque must not be older than three months. RBI cut cheque validity from six months to three months for instruments dated April 1, 2012 onwards (RBI/2011-12/251).
- Post-dated cheques: A cheque dated in the future cannot be presented before that date.
- Amount in words and figures: Both must match. Our guide on how to write amount in words on a cheque shows the correct format.
- Signature: The drawer’s signature must be present and should not be overwritten.
- Alterations: CTS cheques should not carry any changes or corrections other than a date validation. Banks may reject a cheque with overwriting.
- Crossing: An “A/C Payee” crossed cheque can only go into the payee’s own account.
Step-by-Step: How to Deposit a Cheque at a Bank Branch
This is the standard counter process at public sector, private and cooperative banks.
Step 1: Collect a pay-in slip
Pick up a cheque deposit slip from the branch counter or slip stand. Many banks have separate slips for cash and cheques. Use the slip of the bank where your account is held.
Step 2: Fill in the slip
Write these details on both the main slip and the counterfoil:
| Field | What to write |
|---|---|
| Date | Date of deposit |
| Account number | Your full account number (double-check every digit) |
| Account holder name | Name as per bank records |
| Cheque number | 6-digit number at the bottom left of the cheque |
| Drawee bank and branch | Bank that issued the cheque |
| Amount | Amount in figures and words |
| Depositor signature/mobile | Required by some banks |
The cheque number is the first 6-digit block of the MICR line. Our cheque leaf guide labels each part of the leaf, and this explainer shows where the account number sits on a cheque.
Step 3: Write your details on the back of the cheque
Write your account number and mobile number on the back of the cheque, below any printed instructions. This helps the bank trace the cheque if the slip gets separated. Do not write anything in the MICR band at the bottom of the front side.
Step 4: Submit at the counter or drop box
Hand the cheque and slip to the cashier or collection counter. The staff will stamp and sign the counterfoil and return it. This counterfoil is your proof of deposit.
Step 5: Keep the counterfoil safe
Hold on to the stamped counterfoil until the credit appears in your account. If the cheque goes missing, the counterfoil is your evidence for a complaint.
Cheque Drop Box vs Counter Deposit: Which Is Safer?
Both methods are valid, but only the counter gives you a stamped acknowledgement. RBI instructions (RBI/2006-07/214, December 18, 2006) say no branch can refuse to accept a cheque at the counter and give an acknowledgement, and customers cannot be forced to use the drop box.
| Factor | Counter deposit | Drop box |
|---|---|---|
| Acknowledgement | Stamped counterfoil | Usually none (you keep the unsigned counterfoil) |
| Waiting time | Queue during busy hours | No queue |
| Proof if cheque is lost | Strong | Weak |
| Best for | High-value cheques, time-sensitive payments | Small amounts, routine deposits |
Banks must display a notice on the drop box stating that customers can also tender cheques at the counter and get an acknowledgement. If a branch refuses, you can complain to the branch manager and then escalate under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme.
Can I Deposit Cheque in Any Branch?
Yes, in most cases. Banks running Core Banking Solution (CBS) link all their branches, so you can deposit a cheque for credit to your account at any branch of your own bank, not only your home branch.
Points to keep in mind:
- Same bank, any branch: Accepted at almost all CBS-enabled banks, including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Bank of Baroda and Axis Bank.
- Different bank’s branch: You cannot deposit a cheque into your SBI account at an HDFC Bank branch. The cheque must go to a branch of the bank where your account is held.
- Smaller cooperative banks: Some still prefer home-branch deposits. Call ahead.
- Charges: Cheque deposits at non-home branches are generally free for your own account. Check your bank’s schedule of charges for third-party or high-value deposits.
- Third-party deposit: You can deposit a cheque into a family member’s account at any branch of their bank, as long as the cheque is in their name.
Other Ways to Deposit a Cheque
Branch counters are not the only option. Availability depends on your bank, so check the bank’s website or app first.
| Method | How it works | Acknowledgement |
|---|---|---|
| Branch counter | Slip plus cheque handed to staff | Stamped counterfoil |
| Cheque drop box | Slip plus cheque dropped in a locked box | None by default |
| Cheque deposit kiosk/ATM | Insert cheque, machine scans it, enter account details | Printed receipt with cheque image (at most kiosks) |
| Doorstep banking | Bank agent collects the cheque from your home | Pickup receipt |
Unlike the US, where you can photograph a cheque and deposit it through an app, most Indian banks do not offer image-based mobile cheque deposit for retail customers. Bank apps are mainly used to track cheque status.
How to Deposit a Check: Same Process, Different Spelling
“Deposit check” and “deposit cheque” mean the same thing. “Check” is the American spelling, while Indian banks and RBI use “cheque.” The deposit process described here applies to every cheque issued by an Indian bank. Our guide on cheque vs check explains the spelling difference.
How Long Does a Cheque Take to Clear in 2026?
A cheque deposited during the clearing window usually reaches your account on the same working day. RBI moved CTS from batch processing to Continuous Clearing and Settlement on Realisation (CCSR) under circular RBI/2025-26/73, with Phase 1 live from October 4, 2025.
Current timelines under RBI circular RBI/2025-26/156 (December 24, 2025):
| Stage | Timing |
|---|---|
| Presentation window (bank scans and sends cheque) | 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, working days |
| Confirmation window (paying bank approves or rejects) | 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM |
| Unconfirmed cheques | Treated as approved at end of confirmation window |
| Credit to your account | Within 1 hour of settlement |
Phase 2 status: Phase 2 was scheduled for January 3, 2026, with a 3-hour confirmation deadline (T+3 hours). RBI postponed it until further notice in December 2025. As of October 2026, Phase 1 timings apply.
What this means in practice:
- Cheque deposited at 10:00 AM: credit usually by the evening of the same day.
- Cheque deposited after the branch’s cut-off (often around 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM): presented the next working day.
- Cheque dropped on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday: processed on the next working day.
Branch cut-off times are usually earlier than 3:00 PM so staff can scan cheques before the window closes. Ask your branch for its exact cut-off.
Positive Pay: Why High-Value Cheques Get Checked
Positive Pay is an RBI fraud check for cheques of ₹50,000 and above. The person issuing the cheque shares the cheque number, date, payee name and amount with their bank in advance, and CTS matches these details when the cheque is presented.
- RBI asked banks to offer Positive Pay for cheques of ₹50,000 and above from January 1, 2021 (RBI/2020-21/41).
- Banks may make it mandatory for cheques of ₹5 lakh and above.
- If the drawer has not registered the cheque where it is mandatory, or the details do not match, the cheque may be returned.
If you are receiving a high-value cheque, ask the issuer to register it under Positive Pay before you deposit it. This avoids a return and a lost day.
Cheque Deposit Message: SMS Alerts You Will Receive
A cheque deposit message is the SMS your bank sends to your registered mobile number at each stage of the cheque’s journey. Exact wording differs by bank, but the alerts follow a similar pattern.
| Stage | What the SMS tells you | Illustrative format (wording varies by bank) |
|---|---|---|
| Cheque received | Cheque accepted for clearing | “Cheque no. XXXXXX for Rs X received for clearing in A/c XXXX1234” |
| Cheque credited | Amount added to your balance | “A/c XXXX1234 credited with Rs X by clearing, Chq XXXXXX” |
| Cheque returned | Cheque rejected with reason | “Chq XXXXXX for Rs X returned unpaid. Reason: Funds insufficient” |
If you did not get any SMS:
- Check that your mobile number is registered for alerts with the bank.
- Look at your account statement in net banking or the bank app. See how to check your bank balance online.
- Update your passbook at the branch.
- If nothing shows after two working days, visit the branch with your counterfoil.
The return SMS usually carries a reason code. Note it, because it tells you whether the problem is on your side (signature, date, name mismatch) or the drawer’s (insufficient funds, payment stopped).
What If Your Deposited Cheque Is Returned?
A returned cheque comes back to your branch with a return memo stating the reason. Most banks also charge the depositor a return fee, which varies by bank.
| Return reason | Who fixes it | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Funds insufficient | Drawer | Ask the drawer to fund the account and redeposit within validity |
| Signature mismatch | Drawer | Get a fresh cheque |
| Stale cheque (over 3 months) | Drawer | Get a fresh cheque |
| Payee name mismatch | You or drawer | Get a fresh cheque in your correct name |
| Alterations on cheque | Drawer | Get a fresh cheque |
| Payment stopped by drawer | Drawer | Contact the drawer |
A cheque returned for insufficient funds can lead to legal action under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. You must send a written demand notice to the drawer within 30 days of receiving the return memo. Read our guides on dishonoured cheques and their charges, what to do when a cheque bounces and the Section 138 cheque bounce case process.
What Experts Say
Bank branch staff and chartered accountants who handle client collections tend to give the same practical advice:
- Deposit cheques in the morning. Cheques submitted after the branch cut-off lose a full working day, even under continuous clearing.
- Always prefer the counter for cheques above a few thousand rupees. The stamped counterfoil is the only proof that settles disputes over lost cheques.
- For business receipts, record the cheque number, drawer name and deposit date in your books on the day of deposit. This makes reconciliation and any Section 138 notice far easier.
- Ask clients issuing large cheques to register them under Positive Pay. Unregistered high-value cheques are a common reason for avoidable delays.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I deposit a cheque in any branch of my bank?
Yes, in most cases. Banks on Core Banking Solution (CBS) accept cheques for credit to your account at any of their branches. Some cooperative or smaller banks may still insist on the home branch, so check before visiting.
How long does a cheque take to clear in 2026?
A cheque presented in the CTS window (9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on working days) is usually credited the same day, once the drawee bank confirms it by 7:00 PM. Your bank must credit you within one hour of settlement.
Can I deposit a cheque without a pay-in slip?
Most branches still require a cheque deposit slip. Some banks accept cheques at kiosks or let you write the account number on the back of the cheque for drop box deposits, but a counter deposit with a stamped slip is the safest route.
Can someone else deposit a cheque into my account?
Yes. Anyone can deposit a cheque into your account if the cheque is in your name and the pay-in slip carries your correct account number. The depositor does not need to be the account holder.
What is the validity of a cheque for deposit?
A cheque is valid for three months from the date written on it. RBI set this limit from April 1, 2012. A cheque presented after three months is stale and will be returned unpaid.
Is a demand draft deposited the same way as a cheque?
Yes. A demand draft is deposited with a pay-in slip like a cheque and clears through CTS. It does not bounce for insufficient funds because the bank has already collected the money.
For a side-by-side comparison, see demand draft vs cheque. If you also deposit cash regularly, check the savings account deposit and withdrawal limits that apply.
