How This Tax Invoice Generator Works
This tax invoice generator builds a GST invoice laid out on the particulars listed in Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017. You enter the supplier, the customer, the place of supply and the line items. It works out taxable value after discount, then applies CGST and SGST when your state and the place of supply match, or IGST when they differ. Union territories without a legislature (Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh) show UTGST in place of SGST. Your entries stay in your browser and are not sent to a server.
What the tool checks, and what stays with you:
- GSTIN: the tool checks the 15-character pattern, the state code and the check character, and fills the state from the first two digits.
- Invoice number: up to 16 characters, using letters, numbers, "-" and "/" (Rule 46(b)). Keeping it unique for the financial year is your job.
- Taxable value: quantity × price minus discount (Rule 46(k)), rounded to the paisa per line.
- Same state: CGST and SGST, each half the rate. Different state: IGST at the full rate (IGST Act, sections 7 and 8).
- Rounding: an optional "Round to nearest rupee" setting adds a round-off line to the total.
- GST rates offered: 0%, 0.25%, 3%, 5%, 12%, 18%, 28% and 40%. Most goods and services moved to 5%, 18% or 40% from 22 September 2025 (56th GST Council), so pick the rate that applies to your item on the supply date.
- Not checked by the tool: HSN or SAC digit length, the ₹50,000 unregistered-buyer particulars, the services time limit and e-invoice applicability. The sections below explain each one.

Worked Examples
| Scenario | Inputs | Tax worked out | Invoice total | What the tool prints |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Services, same state, B2B | Seller and buyer in Maharashtra. Taxable value ₹50,000. Rate 18%. | CGST 9% = ₹4,500. SGST 9% = ₹4,500. | ₹59,000 | CGST and SGST lines, buyer GSTIN and address. |
| Goods, different state, B2B | Seller in Maharashtra, place of supply Karnataka. 10 units at ₹2,000 = ₹20,000. Discount 5% = ₹1,000. Taxable value ₹19,000. Rate 5%. | IGST 5% = ₹950. | ₹19,950 | Discount given ₹1,000 and taxable value ₹19,000, then IGST. |
| Goods, same state, unregistered buyer | Seller and buyer in Maharashtra. Taxable value ₹60,000. Rate 18%. | CGST 9% = ₹5,400. SGST 9% = ₹5,400. | ₹70,800 | Buyer GSTIN shown as "Unregistered". Rule 46 requires the buyer's name, address, delivery address, state name and code at ₹50,000 or more, so fill those in. At ₹40,000 taxable value they are needed only if the buyer asks. |
Tax Invoice, Bill of Supply or Proforma Invoice
The tool outputs one of three documents, chosen in "More options". For a bill of supply, pick "Exempt supply" or "Composition dealer". The composition legend prints only on the composition version.
| Document | Governing rule | Use it when | Tax shown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tax invoice | Rule 46 | A registered person makes a taxable supply. | Yes: CGST and SGST, or IGST |
| Bill of supply | Rule 49 | The supply is exempt, or the supplier pays tax under the composition scheme (Section 10). | No |
| Proforma invoice | Not a tax invoice | You want to quote a price or ask for payment before the supply. A tax invoice follows on supply. | Shown as an estimate |
A single sale to an unregistered buyer that mixes taxable and exempt items needs an invoice-cum-bill of supply under Rule 46A. This tool has no separate option for it.
When You Need an E-Invoice Instead
This tool does not generate an IRN or an e-invoice QR code. The QR code it can print is a UPI payment code only. Check your turnover before you use the tool for B2B or export sales.
| Aggregate turnover | What applies | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Above ₹5 crore in any year from 2017-18 | E-invoice for supplies to registered persons and for exports, generated through the Invoice Registration Portal | Notification 10/2023-CT, from 1 August 2023 |
| ₹10 crore or more | Each e-invoice must be reported within 30 days of the invoice date | GSTN advisory of 5 November 2024, from 1 April 2025 |
| Up to ₹5 crore in every year | No e-invoice needed. This tool's invoice can be issued. | Notification 10/2023-CT |
What Experts Say
- Practitioners recommend fixing the numbering series at the start of each financial year and never reusing a number. GSTN's advisory of 4 April 2019 says departures from the Rule 46 numbering format can cause problems at e-way bill generation, GSTR-1 filing and refunds.
- Practitioners treat place of supply as the field to verify first, since it alone decides whether the invoice carries CGST and SGST or IGST.
- Practitioners advise checking turnover history before using any manual invoice tool. The e-invoicing test looks at every year from 2017-18, so one year above ₹5 crore keeps the obligation even if turnover falls later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a free invoice generator for GST in India?
Yes. This free invoice generator creates a GST tax invoice, bill of supply or proforma invoice in your browser, with CGST, SGST or IGST worked out. It prints the particulars Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017 requires from what you enter. You are still responsible for the inputs, so check the GSTIN, place of supply, HSN or SAC code and tax rate before you send the invoice.
Is an invoice from this free online invoice generator valid under GST?
An invoice is valid when it carries the particulars in Rule 46 and is issued within the time limit. This free online invoice generator prints those particulars from your inputs. It does not create an e-invoice, which needs an IRN and QR code from the Invoice Registration Portal. If your turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any year from 2017-18, B2B and export invoices must be e-invoices.
How to create invoice online for a customer without a GSTIN?
Enter the customer's name, address and state, and leave the GSTIN blank. The invoice shows the customer as unregistered. If the taxable value is ₹50,000 or more, also add the delivery address and the state name and code. Below ₹50,000 these details are needed only if the customer asks for them. Check the place of supply, then download the invoice.
Do I need an e-invoice instead of this tool's invoice?
Yes, if your aggregate turnover exceeded ₹5 crore in any financial year from 2017-18 onwards and you supply to a registered person or export. The obligation stays even if turnover later falls. Taxpayers at ₹10 crore or more must also report each e-invoice to the portal within 30 days of the invoice date. If turnover stayed at ₹5 crore or below in every year, you do not need one.
Can a composition dealer use this tool?
Yes, by choosing "Bill of Supply (Composition dealer)". A composition dealer does not charge GST, so a bill of supply shows no tax. Under Section 31(3)(c) of the CGST Act, a supplier of exempt goods or services, or one paying tax under Section 10, issues a bill of supply instead of a tax invoice. Rule 49 lists the details it must carry.
What is the time limit to issue a GST invoice?
For services, within 30 days from the date of supply, or 45 days for insurers, banks and other financial institutions including NBFCs (Rule 47 of the CGST Rules). For goods, Section 31(1) of the CGST Act requires the invoice before or at the time of removal or delivery. The tool does not check the invoice date against these limits, so set the date with them in mind.
What must an export invoice carry?
It must carry an endorsement stating that the supply is meant for export or for supply to an SEZ unit or developer, either on payment of integrated tax or under bond or letter of undertaking without payment of integrated tax. In place of the unregistered-buyer details, it must show the recipient's name and address, the delivery address and the country of destination (Rule 46). The tool does not add the endorsement, so type it into "Terms and notes".
Can I skip the invoice for a small cash sale?
Section 31(3)(b) of the CGST Act allows a registered person to skip the tax invoice when the value of the supply is less than ₹200. Under Rule 46, the buyer must be unregistered and must not ask for an invoice, and you must issue a consolidated invoice at the close of each day covering such supplies. If the buyer asks for an invoice, issue one.
Does this tool store my invoice data?
No server stores it. The tool keeps your last invoice in your own browser so you can come back to it, and nothing is uploaded. Clearing your browser data, or using the "New invoice" button, removes it. The PDF is built on your device when you click Download PDF.
