How Long Does Cheque Clearing Take: Complete Time Guide for All Banks

Quick answer: Cheque clearing time in India is now the same working day for most cheques. Under RBI’s continuous clearing system, a cheque deposited before your bank’s cut-off (the clearing house accepts cheques from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM) is usually credited within a few hours, and no later than the same evening. Cheques deposited after the cut-off or on a holiday clear on the next working day.

This rule applies to every bank in the Cheque Truncation System (CTS), including SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, PNB and Bank of Baroda. If you are new to how a cheque works, start there.

Cheque Clearing Time in India: The Current RBI Rule

RBI moved cheque clearing from batch processing to Continuous Clearing and Settlement on Realisation on October 4, 2025, under circular RBI/2025-26/73. Before this, clearing ran on a T+1 cycle and could take up to two working days. Now cheque images move to the paying bank continuously through the day, and money is released as soon as the cheque is approved.

What Changed in December 2025

RBI’s circular dated December 24, 2025 made two changes. The presentation session moved earlier to 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and the confirmation session now runs 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. It also postponed Phase 2 “until further notice”.

What Phase 2 Would Change (On Hold)

Phase 2 was planned for January 3, 2026. It would give the paying bank only 3 clear hours to approve or reject each cheque. RBI’s own example: cheques received between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM must be confirmed by 2:00 PM, or they are treated as approved. As of October 2026, RBI has not announced a new start date, so the 7:00 PM deadline still applies.

How Bank to Bank Cheque Clearance Works Step by Step

Bank to bank cheque clearance runs through the CTS grid operated by NPCI. The physical cheque stays with your bank. Only a scanned image and data travel to the paying bank. Here is the flow on a normal working day:

  1. You deposit the cheque at a branch, drop box or ATM kiosk of your bank (the presenting bank).
  2. Your bank scans it and sends the image to the clearing house during the 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM presentation window.
  3. The clearing house forwards the image to the drawer’s bank (the drawee bank) right away.
  4. The drawee bank checks signature, balance, date and Positive Pay details, then sends a positive or negative confirmation.
  5. Settlement happens in hourly cycles for all approved cheques and those deemed approved.
  6. Your bank credits your account immediately, and no later than 1 hour after settlement, subject to usual safeguards.

Same Bank vs Different Bank Cheques

A cheque drawn on the same bank where you deposit it (for example, an SBI cheque into an SBI account) is often credited faster. It is a transfer within one bank and many banks process it internally without going through the clearing house. Timelines for these “transfer” cheques depend on the bank’s own policy.

Cheque Clearing Time by Deposit Time

Your actual credit time depends mostly on when the cheque reaches your bank’s clearing desk, not on which bank you use.

When you depositWhen it is presentedExpected credit
Early morning, before branch scan cut-offSame morningSame day, often by afternoon
MiddaySame day, before 3:00 PMSame day, by evening

Sunday or gazetted holidayNext working dayNext working day

Practical note: Branches and drop boxes usually have an internal cut-off earlier than 3:00 PM, because the branch needs time to scan and transmit. Check the cut-off time displayed at your branch or drop box. A cheque dropped at 2:55 PM will usually miss same-day presentation.

Cheque Clearing Time for All Banks

Every bank in India follows the same RBI clearing timetable, because all bank branches are connected to the CTS grid. There is no separate “SBI clearing time” or “HDFC clearing time” set by RBI. What differs between banks is the branch cut-off, the drop box collection schedule and how fast the SMS alert goes out.

Why Your Cheque Is Taking Longer Than a Day

If a cheque has not cleared in one working day, one of these is usually the reason:

  • Deposited after cut-off or on a holiday. It moves to the next working day.
  • Large amount under extra verification. RBI allows banks to release funds “subject to usual safeguards”, so high-value or unusual cheques can be held for checks.
  • Positive Pay mismatch. For cheques of ₹50,000 and above, the drawer can share cheque details with their bank in advance. If details don’t match, the drawee bank may hold or return it.
  • Errors on the cheque. Overwriting, mismatch between figures and words, or a missing signature. Our guide on writing the amount in words on a cheque covers common mistakes.
  • Stale or post-dated cheque. A cheque is valid for 3 months from its date. A post-dated cheque can’t be cleared before the date written on it.
  • Image quality problem. A torn, folded or stained cheque may fail scanning and need re-presentation.
  • Sponsor bank route. Some co-operative banks clear through a larger sponsor bank, which adds a step.

CTS-2010 Standard Cheques

Only cheques printed to the CTS-2010 standard are processed in clearing. These have security features like a void pantograph and standardised field positions. If you’re unsure what each part of the leaf means, read about the cheque leaf and where the account number sits on a cheque. Old non-CTS cheque books should be replaced through your bank.

Account Payee Cheque Clearing Rules

An account payee cheque has two parallel lines across the top-left corner with “A/C Payee” written between them. It can only be credited to the bank account of the person or entity named as payee. It cannot be encashed at the counter or endorsed to someone else.

Clearing time: Account payee cheques follow the same CTS timetable. A crossing does not slow clearance down. The only extra step is that your bank matches the payee name on the cheque with the account holder name before crediting.

PointBearer chequeAccount payee cheque

Rule on third-party credit: RBI does not allow banks to collect an account payee cheque for any account other than the payee’s. One narrow exception, under RBI circular RBI/2010-11/239, lets banks collect account payee cheques up to ₹50,000 for co-operative credit societies, when the payee is a member of that society and the society gives a written undertaking to credit only the named member.

Name mismatch: If the payee name differs from the account name (for example, “Ramesh Kumar” vs “R. Kumar Traders”), the bank may refuse to accept it or return it. Write the payee’s full name as it appears on their bank account.

Cheque Clearing Message: What Each SMS Means

A cheque clearing message is the SMS or app notification your bank sends at each stage. Exact wording varies by bank, but the messages fall into four types.

Message stageWhat it tells youMoney available?
Cheque received / depositedYour bank has accepted the cheque for clearingNo
Sent for clearing / under clearingImage presented to the paying bankNo
Credited / clearedAmount added to your accountYes
Returned / unpaidPaying bank rejected the cheque, with a reasonNo

Illustrative example of a credit message: “Rs 25,000 credited to A/c XX1234 on 11-10-26 by CLG/CTS chq no 000123.” Narrations like CLG (clearing), CTS and CHQ are standard short forms. See the full list in our banking abbreviations guide.

If You Get a Return Message

A return SMS includes the reason, such as funds insufficient, signature differs, payment stopped by drawer or account closed. A returned cheque means the payment has failed and you will need to contact the drawer. If the reason is insufficient funds, you may have legal remedies. Read what a dishonoured cheque means, the cheque bounce process, and the timeline for a Section 138 NI Act case.

If You Issued the Cheque

Continuous clearing also cuts the time you have to fund your account. Once the payee deposits your cheque, the debit can hit within a few hours. Keep enough balance from the day you hand the cheque over.

How to Check Bank Cheque Clearance Status

You can track bank cheque clearance status in four ways:

  • SMS alerts on your registered mobile number (the fastest signal)
  • Mobile banking or net banking, under account statement or “cheque status”
  • Passbook update or mini statement at an ATM
  • Branch or customer care, quoting the cheque number and deposit date

Keep the deposit slip counterfoil until the money is credited. It is your proof of the date and time of deposit. Our guide on checking bank balance online shows where to see recent credits in popular banking apps.

What to Do If Your Cheque Is Not Credited

  1. Wait until 7:00 PM on the deposit day (or the next working day if deposited after cut-off). Many credits land in the later settlement cycles.
  2. Check for a return SMS or a return entry in your statement.
  3. Contact your branch with the counterfoil and cheque number. Ask whether the cheque was presented and what the status is.
  4. Raise a written complaint with the bank if there is no clear answer. Every bank has a board-approved Cheque Collection Policy that covers delays and compensation.
  5. Escalate to the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in under the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme, 2021, if the bank does not resolve it within 30 days or rejects your complaint.

Tips to Get Your Cheque Cleared the Same Day

  • Deposit early in the day, well before the branch cut-off
  • Avoid drop boxes late in the afternoon; deposit at the counter instead
  • Check the date, payee name, amount in words and figures, and signature before depositing
  • For cheques of ₹50,000 or more, ask the drawer to register details under Positive Pay
  • Use only CTS-2010 cheques and avoid folding or stapling them
  • Make sure your mobile number is linked to your account for clearing messages

What Experts Say

Bankers and chartered accountants who handle client collections generally agree that continuous clearing has made cheques a same-day instrument in practice, though not an instant one like UPI or IMPS. The most common cause of delay they report is not the clearing system but the customer: deposits made after the branch cut-off, payee name mismatches on account payee cheques, and Positive Pay details not registered for high-value cheques. Practitioners also point out that businesses which issue cheques now need tighter cash planning, because the debit lands hours after deposit instead of the next day.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does cheque clearing take in India now?

Cheque clearing takes a few hours on the same working day for most cheques. Under RBI’s continuous clearing system, a cheque deposited before the bank’s cut-off is presented between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM and credited the same day. Cheques deposited after the cut-off or on a holiday clear the next working day.

What is the cheque clearing time for SBI, HDFC and ICICI?

All three banks follow the same RBI timetable: presentation from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, approval by 7:00 PM, and credit within one hour of settlement. The only difference is each branch’s internal cut-off time for same-day processing.

Does an account payee cheque take longer to clear?

No. An account payee cheque follows the same CTS clearing timetable as any other cheque. The bank only checks that the payee name matches the account holder before crediting the amount.

Can an account payee cheque be deposited in someone else’s account?

No. An account payee cheque can only be credited to the account of the named payee. RBI allows a narrow exception for co-operative credit societies, for cheques up to ₹50,000, when the payee is a member of that society.

What does a cheque clearing message mean?

A cheque clearing message is the SMS your bank sends when a cheque is received, sent for clearing, credited or returned. Only the “credited” message means the money is in your account and available to use.

Is cheque clearing done on Saturday?

Cheque clearing runs on bank working days. Cheques are not cleared on the second and fourth Saturdays, Sundays or bank holidays, so a cheque deposited on these days is processed on the next working day.

When will the 3-hour cheque clearing rule start?

RBI planned 3-hour cheque clearing (Phase 2) for January 3, 2026, but postponed it until further notice through its circular dated December 24, 2025. Until RBI announces a new date, the paying bank has until 7:00 PM the same day to approve or reject a cheque.
