It is generated instantly on successful submission and payment, whether you apply through Protean’s online portal, a PAN service centre, or UTIITSL. The number is printed on the acknowledgement receipt, emailed to your registered address, and sometimes sent by SMS.
It is not your PAN. The acknowledgement number exists only to track the application while it’s being processed. Once your PAN is allotted, the acknowledgement number has no further use except as a record of when and how you applied.
How to Get Your PAN Acknowledgement Number
The acknowledgement number is generated automatically. You don’t request it separately; it appears the moment your application and payment go through.
If You Applied Through Protean (NSDL)
- Complete the PAN application on the Protean portal (or through a TIN-FC / PAN centre) and pay the applicable fee.
- On successful submission, a confirmation screen displays your 15-digit acknowledgement number.
- A copy of the acknowledgement receipt, carrying the same number, is emailed to your registered address.
- If you applied offline, the PAN centre prints the receipt for you on the spot.
Protean’s own correction-form guidance shows the format on the physical receipt as, for example, “N-881010200000097” when the application needs to be couriered in with supporting documents.
If You Applied Through UTIITSL
- Complete the application on the UTIITSL portal and make payment.
- UTIITSL generates a Coupon Number on successful submission. This is UTIITSL’s equivalent of the acknowledgement number.
- The coupon number appears on the confirmation page and is sent by email and, typically, SMS.

How to Track PAN Status Using the Acknowledgement Number
Online: Protean Portal
Visit the official Protean PAN status tracking page, select “PAN – New/Change Request” under Application Type, enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number, complete the captcha, and submit. This is confirmed directly on the Income Tax Department’s own Protean status page.
Online: UTIITSL Portal
Visit UTIITSL’s PAN tracking page, select the application type, enter your Coupon Number, and submit. UTIITSL’s status page also accepts your allotted PAN number plus date of birth as an alternative once the PAN itself exists.
SMS
Send NSDLPAN followed by a space and your 15-digit acknowledgement number to 57575 (for example, “NSDLPAN 097250157497256”). You’ll get a status reply by text. This method only works for Protean applications.
Phone
Call the Protean TIN call centre at 020-27218080, available 7 AM to 11 PM, and provide your acknowledgement number. For UTIITSL applications, use their helpline at 033-40802999 (Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 8 PM IST).

Without the acknowledgement number, Protean’s official portal offers no name-and-date-of-birth fallback for a pending application. You need the number itself, or you need to wait until PAN allotment and switch to tracking by PAN and date of birth instead.
How to Download Your e-PAN Using the Acknowledgement Number
Once your application is processed, you can pull the e-PAN PDF directly:
- Go to Protean’s e-PAN download page.
- Enter your 15-digit acknowledgement number and date of birth.
- Complete the captcha and submit.
- Enter your registered mobile number and email ID, then generate an OTP.
- Validate the OTP and download the e-PAN in PDF format.

Lost Your Acknowledgement Number? How to Recover It
Check these places, in order of likelihood:
- Registered email: search for “PAN acknowledgement” or “Protean” / “UTIITSL” around the date you applied; the confirmation email carries the number.
- SMS inbox: Protean sends a text with the number to the mobile entered on the form.
- Printed receipt: if you applied offline at a PAN centre, the physical acknowledgement slip has it.
- Payment confirmation: your bank or card statement won’t show the number itself, but the transaction date narrows down which email or SMS to search for.

Acknowledgement Numbers Under the New PAN Forms (93–96)
From 1 April 2026, new PAN applications use Forms 93, 94, 95, and 96 in place of the discontinued Forms 49A and 49AA, under Rule 158 of the Income-tax Rules, 2026.
